„The Homestay-Experience in Clif’s house in Fayetteville, North Carolina was my first trip to the USA. It was super to have someone who knows the country so well. In addition to the private lessons in the morning Clif showed me a lot of the city of Fayetteville and the surrounding areas that only an insider would know. I found it exciting to learn about the American daily lifestyle in this way. I profited a lot in my speaking in these two weeks.“

Fayetteville, North Carolina

Fayetteville, the only city visited by the American revolutionary war hero, the French General Marquis de Lafayette, has three universities and two colleges. As a graduate of one of these colleges Clif Middleton is a long standing member of the community and depending on the scheduling you will have opportunities to accompany him to business meetings, medical seminars, history talks and voluntary activities to practice your listening skills. This is particularly good because you will hear different accents and speech patterns by other mother tongue English speakers.

Part of the Eastern National Scenic Byway runs through North Carolina along the Cape Fear River which is minutes from our house and is ideal for walking or cycling. A bicycle is at your disposal. Other daily activity options are cycling, disc golf, canoeing, fishing, zip line, visiting different parks, a drive through some of the more established communities (nice to see how the other half lives) shopping or just relax a bit in the privacy of the back yard. On weekends the beach is within reach as is the state capital with world class museums and art galleries. Also, there is a possibly to visit the Outer Banks coastal islands, which became famous because the aviation pioneers the Wright Brothers made the first successful airplane flights there. Or spend a day at the world’s largest Zoo (in land mass). From spring to autumn Fayetteville hosts several festivals such as the Dogwood festival in April. These festivals draw visitors from all over North Carolina and neighboring states to listen to three days of open air music at Festival Park. As well as to enjoy carnival rides and food, especially food from different countries during the International Folks Festival in September. Every fourth Friday of the month there is a special night of open art galleries, street musicians and different music venues outdoors and indoors in downtown Fayetteville. For Swiss a visit to North Carolina would not be complete without a visit to New Bern North Carolina, where the first Swiss settlers stopped to build a permanent settlement in the America. New Bern has its bears (statues only) and was once the capital of NC with the governor’s palace. For trivia buffs New Bern, North Carolina is the birthplace of Pepsi Cola! Not to be left out there are a number of towns and cities founded by other European settlers that can be visited on a weekend in North Carolina.
